Two years after its debut in the Indian SUV market, the five-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny has crossed the 100,000-unit sales mark—albeit more globally than domestically. According to SIAM wholesale data, the Jimny has recorded cumulative sales of 102,024 units since its launch in June 2023. Of this total, only 26,180 units were sold in India, while the remaining 75,844 units were exported to international markets.

Originally showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, the five-door Jimny was conceived as a longer and more practical version of Suzuki’s popular three-door global off-roader. Developed specifically for India and manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram facility—the global hub for the model—the Jimny targeted lifestyle SUV buyers through the company’s premium Nexa retail channel. Despite a promising start with over 30,000 bookings ahead of its launch, the SUV’s appeal in the domestic market has remained limited.

The Jimny’s powertrain—a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 103 bhp and 134 Nm—uses Maruti’s older K15B engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. While Maruti claims mileage figures of 16.94 kmpl (MT) and 16.39 kmpl (AT), the SUV has struggled to meet urban SUV buyer expectations. Critics have pointed to the lack of modern creature comforts, heavy steering, wide turning radius, and underwhelming performance as key deterrents in the city-oriented Indian market.

In stark contrast, the Jimny has emerged as a major success story in export markets. Since export operations began in October 2023, demand from countries like Mexico, Australia, and South Africa has surged. A pivotal moment came when Suzuki Motor Corporation introduced the India-made five-door Jimny in Japan under the ‘Suzuki Nomade’ nameplate in January 2025. Bookings in Japan surpassed 50,000 within four days, forcing the company to temporarily suspend new orders due to overwhelming demand.

The success of the Jimny in Japan has been instrumental in enhancing Maruti Suzuki’s export footprint. It became the second Maruti model after the Fronx to be exported to Suzuki’s home market in Japan. In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki exported a record 330,081 passenger vehicles, with UV exports doubling year-on-year to 157,000 units. The Fronx and Jimny together accounted for 44 per cent and 31 per cent of the company’s UV exports, respectively.
The momentum has continued into FY2026, with April 2025 data showing Fronx and Jimny as Maruti’s top exported SUVs—7,055 and 5,671 units respectively. This strong export performance has enabled Maruti Suzuki to retain its title as India’s top passenger vehicle exporter for the fourth consecutive fiscal year.
