The debut of the Swift in 2005 marked a significant milestone for Indian car buyers. Developed for both domestic and global markets, the first-generation Swift stood out for its nimble handling and distinctive design, setting it apart from other Maruti offerings. Powered initially by the proven G13 petrol engine, it later incorporated the popular 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. Over time, Swift witnessed upgrades to meet BS4 compliance, including the adoption of the K-Series 1.2-litre petrol engine.
The success of the first-generation Swift was evident, with sales surpassing the 1 lakh and 2 lakh unit milestones within a short span. By the time it made way for the second-generation model in 2010, the Swift had already amassed over 5 lakh units in sales.
The second-generation Swift aimed to enhance the original's appeal by offering a larger and more spacious interior while retaining its iconic silhouette. It continued to feature manual transmission options with the same petrol and diesel engine choices as its predecessor.
Building on the momentum of its predecessor, the second-generation Swift achieved impressive sales milestones, reaching 10 lakh units by 2013 and 15 lakh units by 2016, firmly establishing its popularity in the Indian market.

The third-generation Swift, introduced in 2018, further refined the hatchback's design and performance. With the adoption of the Heartect platform, the third-gen model boasted improved efficiency and agility. Notable upgrades included the introduction of automated manual transmission (AMT) options and a factory-fitted CNG kit, catering to evolving consumer preferences.
In 2020, Maruti discontinued its diesel engine range, transitioning to the cleaner Dual Jet 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine. The third-gen Swift also marked the brand's shift towards eco-friendly technologies, offering a mild-hybrid option for enhanced fuel efficiency.
Now, as the fourth-generation Swift prepares to debut, anticipation is high for the latest iteration of this beloved hatchback. With a sleeker design, advanced features, and a new Z Series three-cylinder petrol engine, the Swift continues to evolve while maintaining its legacy of innovation and performance.
