As the financial year 2024-25 draws to a close, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has catapulted again to the top position as India’s best-selling car, outperforming Tata Punch, according to Vahan data. The Punch registered total sales of 1,96,572 units from April 2024 to March 2025. Meanwhile, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R recorded 1,98,451 units in the same period, maintaining a lead over the Tata Punch. The news is particularly interesting as earlier this year, Tata Motors shattered Maruti Suzuki’s four-decade record by dethroning Wagon R and Swift from the top position in terms of sales in 2024. The report suggested that an overall 202,000 units (Punch) were sold out in 2024, while Wagon R sales figures stood at 191,000 units.

*The difference is between the Wagon R from the Punch.
Both Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Wagon R demonstrated strong performances in FY25, but Wagon R ultimately emerged as the winner in total annual sales. While Punch dominated the early months, Wagon R’s late-year momentum, particularly in January and February 2025, solidified its lead.
Overall, Maruti Suzuki sold slightly over 22.34 lakh units in India in FY25, registering a growth of 4.6 per cent compared to FY24, when the company sold 21.53 lakh units. This figure includes the company's overall sales, which include passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and exports.
On the other hand, Tata Motors experienced a mixed performance in FY25. The company faced challenges across various segments, including passenger vehicles (PV), commercial vehicles (CV), and electric vehicles (EV). In FY25, Tata Motors reported total PV sales of 553,585 units, marking a 3 per cent decline from the previous year's 570,955 units.
