All three carmakers report double-digit growth ahead of the festive season, though Maruti's gains dwarf its rivals.
Maruti Suzuki India extended its lead over Hyundai and Mahindra in September, with domestic passenger vehicle sales rising 36.9 per cent year-on-year even as both competitors posted their own record months. Maruti sold 181,838 units domestically, against 132,820 a year earlier, while Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) and Mahindra & Mahindra reported growth of 10.9 per cent and 14 per cent respectively in the same category.
Maruti's utility vehicle range — the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Invicto, Victoris, XL6 and the newly launched eVitara — sold 78,911 units, up 62 per cent from 48,695. That single segment alone outsold Mahindra's entire SUV lineup, which stood at 64,092 units, and comfortably exceeded Hyundai's total domestic volume of 57,166 units. Including exports of 44,219 units, Maruti's overall sales reached 236,013 for the month, up 24.4 per cent.

Hyundai's September was its strongest since the company began Indian operations, with total sales of 77,916 units, a rise of 10.8 per cent, surpassing the previous high set in July. Domestic sales climbed to 57,166 units while exports, a growing pillar of HMIL's business, rose 10.4 per cent to 20,750 units. Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the company had closed the month with its highest-ever total, a milestone he attributed to healthy double-digit growth across both home and overseas markets. Bookings opened during the month for the new Bayon SUV, which the company is counting on to sustain momentum through the festive quarter.
Mahindra's SUV sales rose 14 per cent to 64,092 units, part of an overall figure of 114,874 vehicles that also includes light commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and exports. Automotive Business President Velusamy R said SUV sales had clocked a 14 per cent rise and that the company had also crossed a cumulative one lakh units sold of its Electric Origin range since launch.
The divergence in growth rates owes much to the base from which each company was measuring. September 2025 was an unusually weak month for Maruti because of buyer hesitation ahead of the GST 2.0 rate cuts that took effect that September, whereas Hyundai and Mahindra both had stronger comparative months last year, Hyundai on the back of record Creta sales. The figures also reflect dealer stocking ahead of Navratri, which falls in October this year rather than September, inflating wholesale volumes industry-wide ahead of the festive buying season.
