With 662 bhp and an impressive 1019.5 Nm of torque, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance is the most powerful 4-cylinder car currently on the road.
Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for the 14th launch in India this year with its 2024 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance. This latest model marries a petrol engine with electric power for performance gains and will appeal to enthusiasts who prioritise both power and advanced technology. The car combines a high-performance 4-cylinder petrol engine with a 197 bhp electric motor, resulting in a total output of 662 bhp and an impressive 1019.5 Nm of torque, establishing it as the most powerful 4-cylinder car currently on the road.
Drawing on its experience in Formula One, Mercedes-AMG has incorporated electric propulsion technology into the C 63 S E Performance. The high-output electric motor works in tandem with the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, 463 bhp petrol engine to enhance acceleration and responsiveness. Unlike typical plug-in hybrids, the C 63 S E Performance's electric component is designed primarily for power rather than efficiency. Its electric drive can achieve a 13 km range. This setup allows the car’s battery to recharge during regular driving, eliminating the need for frequent external charging to maintain high power levels.
The C 63 S E Performance promises a driving experience that is meticulously engineered for both the road and the track. Notably, the steering wheel incorporates dials that allow drivers to shift between different driving modes—such as Sport, Sport+, and Race. In the cabin, the multimedia display is slightly angled toward the driver.
Mercedes-AMG has equipped the C 63 S E Performance with several features aimed at enhancing its handling and overall performance. The car features rear-wheel steering, which improves manoeuvrability at lower speeds and stability at higher speeds. An upgraded suspension system is designed to handle the combined output from the gas and electric motors, while high-performance brakes are intended to provide reliable stopping power even under rigorous driving conditions.
The car’s electric motor is also engineered to support the gas turbocharger, effectively eliminating turbo lag and allowing for near-instantaneous power delivery from the engine. This enhancement is significant for drivers seeking seamless acceleration and high responsiveness from their vehicles.
In addition to its road capabilities, the C 63 S E Performance has been optimized for track performance. A unique Track Mode provides real-time feedback, acting as both a coach and a co-pilot. This feature helps drivers maximize the car’s performance on any of approximately 30 pre-programmed world-class tracks, adjusting dynamics and power distribution to suit the specific requirements of each corner, apex, and straight.
The car’s performance system also enables drivers to personalize their experience through customizable settings. With the help of control dials on the steering wheel, drivers can toggle between drive modes, including a manual mode or Track Mode, which activates specific performance settings displayed on the driver’s display and multimedia screen.
The new C 63 S E Performance departs from the traditional “Biturbo” badging of previous AMG C models in favour of an “e-Performance” badge. This branding shift highlights the integration of electric propulsion into AMG’s performance ethos. The sedan’s exterior features the “Turbo e-Performance” badge just below an air vent on the side, signifying the hybrid nature of the vehicle. Additionally, an “S” badge on the rear, with red accenting, denotes the car’s electric-boosted power.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance is positioned as a high-end, performance-focused luxury sedan, with pricing ranging from $84,000 to just over $100,000. This model is expected to attract both luxury sedan buyers and performance enthusiasts interested in the latest advancements in automotive engineering. Despite its relatively quiet startup and the smaller 4-cylinder engine, AMG aims to maintain the powerful driving experience the brand is known for.
