The new AMG PHEV coupe is the quickest series production model from Mercedes’ performance division.

Nearly eight months after the new AMG GT Coupé made its debut, Mercedes-Benz has revealed the AMG GT 63 S E Performance variant of its flagship sportscar. The AMG GT 63 S E Performance is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) like its four-door namesake.

Under the hood of the AMG GT 63 S E Performance is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the AMG GT 63 4Matic+ but it now produces 603 bhp and 850 Nm. Along with an electric motor that produces 201 bhp and 320 Nm, the AMG PHEV coupe is said to produce 805 bhp and 1,430 Nm (combined). As near as makes no difference, it has a 6.1 kWh battery with an electric-only range of 13 km. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Mercedes-AMG says the GT 63 S Performance can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in just 2.8 seconds, making it the quickest series production model yet from Affalterbach. In comparison, the non-PHEV GT 63 does the 0-100 kmph in 3.2 seconds and the AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-door Coupe does it in 2.9 seconds.

Cosmetically, the only difference between the PHEV and the standard AMG GT 63 is the addition of the charging port on the rear of the hybrid model. Other than the charging port, the hybrid also gets some special badges to make it stand out from the regular model.

Furthermore, Mercedes-AMG has also added a carbon fibre front diffuser that stays hidden until the car hits 80 kmph. After that, it lowers itself by 40 mm and Mercedes-AMG claims it creates a Venturi effect that helps reduce lift on the front end.

Inside, it remains the same as the standard AMG GT Coupe and gets the vertically oriented 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. It also comes with a 2+2 seating configuration, a digital instrument cluster and performance bucket seats are optional.

Mercedes-AMG says the GT 63 S E Performance will go on sale globally in the third quarter of 2024 and prices are expected to be announced at a later stage. At the moment, Mercedes-Benz India does not have the new AMG GT in its line-up in India and expect it to come sometime in 2025. It currently sells the AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-door Coupe for ₹3.30 crore (ex-showroom, India).
