Mercedes-Benz has released a significantly revised and expanded section of its digital multimedia archive.

The Mercedes-Benz Group Archive has released a significantly revised and expanded section of its digital multimedia archive and research system, M@RS, to celebrate a rich history of motorsport achievements spanning 130 years. This comprehensive update, which currently details the period from 1894 to 1955, includes enhanced visual elements, a new categorisation system, and detailed introductory texts that contextualise the brand’s storied past in motorsport.

Mercedes-Benz's motorsport journey began on July 22, 1894, when two vehicles equipped with Daimler licence engines emerged victorious in the first-ever automobile competition, the Paris–Rouen race. This event, organised by the French newspaper "Le Petit Journal," marked the birth of motorsport, with Gottlieb Daimler and his son Paul witnessing the historic race.

After reflecting on the race in 1914, Paul Daimler described the diversity of competing vehicles, ranging from heavy steam cars to lightweight tricycles and petrol-powered automobiles. This race highlighted the competition between different drive technologies and set the stage for Mercedes-Benz’s enduring association with motorsport.

Several significant anniversaries in 2024 underscore the brand's deep-rooted connection to motorsport:

1924 Targa Florio Victory (100 Years): Christian Werner’s triumph in the gruelling Targa Florio race in Sicily with a Mercedes 2-litre supercharged racing car is celebrated by restoring an original 1924 racing car.

Debut of the Mercedes-Benz W 25 (90 Years): The iconic “Silver Arrows” began their journey at the 1934 Eifel race, with Manfred von Brauchitsch securing victory.

The success of the Mercedes-Benz W 196 R (70 Years): Juan Manuel Fangio won the French Grand Prix on July 4, 1954, in Reims with the new W 196 R, initiating a series of victories for the Silver Arrows.

Lewis Hamilton’s 2014 Formula One Championship (10 Years): Hamilton’s drivers’ title, coupled with the constructors’ title for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, marked the beginning of a dominant era in Formula One.

To mark these milestones, the M@RS system has been restructured to include a new superordinate category: “eras, racing series, championships.” This allows users to explore the history of Mercedes-Benz motorsport through categorised sections of drivers, vehicles, races, rallies, and record drives. The expansion makes the archive more user-friendly, offering a rich, visually optimised resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
