Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC To Launch In India On November 4

Mercedes-Benz India will launch the electric GLC on November 4, with expressions of interest opening on October 5, the company has announced. The SUV will be built at its Chakan plant near Pune.

According to Mercedes-Benz, it will be the fastest global model to reach India as a locally assembled vehicle, arriving just six months after sales began in Europe. That timeline reflects how quickly the company is moving electric products into Chakan, where local production also gives it more room on pricing against fully imported rivals. The company has not announced a price.

India will get only the GLC 400 4Matic, which pairs a 94kWh battery with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. It produces 800Nm and is claimed to reach 100kph from rest in 4.3 seconds. The claimed WLTP range is up to 715km, a figure that typically overstates what owners achieve in Indian traffic and heat. Mercedes-Benz has also decided against bringing the longer-wheelbase version to India, so buyers will get the standard-wheelbase car.

The launch builds on the CLA EV, which arrived in April at ₹55 lakh (ex-showroom) as the entry point to the Mercedes range, replacing the A-Class Limousine, EQA and EQB. Mercedes-Benz India has said the CLA sold out within days, with customers willing to wait five to six months for delivery. The company reported that battery-electric vehicles doubled to 14 per cent of its sales mix in the second quarter, driven by the CLA and the EQS SUV.

The GLC is a different proposition. It is Mercedes-Benz's best-selling model globally, and its petrol and diesel versions have long been a mainstay in the Indian luxury SUV segment. An electric version at the core of the range puts the brand's EV push in front of buyers who have so far preferred combustion models in the mid-sized luxury SUV space.

The timing suits the company. Mercedes-Benz sold 19,007 vehicles in India in 2025, down from 19,500 a year earlier, as a 23 per cent fall in entry-segment sales and stiff competition from BMW, which sold about 18,000 cars, narrowed its lead. The company has since recovered, retailing a record 9,768 vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 9 per cent year on year.

Pricing will decide how far the GLC Electric can widen that recovery. The CLA gave Mercedes-Benz a lower entry point into electric ownership, but a mid-sized SUV built around a 94kWh pack will sit well above it. How close local assembly allows the company to price the car to its petrol and diesel siblings will be the main question when it launches next month.
