The findings emerged during a routine inspection by MPCB conducted on August 23, 2024.
The Mercedes-Benz India assembly plant in Chakan, Pune, has been found non-compliant with pollution control guidelines established by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The findings emerged during a routine inspection conducted on August 23, 2024. The plant’s non-compliance raises concerns, given the brand’s reputation for excellence in both automotive innovation and corporate responsibility.
The inspection revealed that the plant is not meeting the environmental standards mandated by the MPCB, an issue that could have significant implications for the company’s image. As one of the world’s leading luxury car manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz is widely expected to set benchmarks in sustainable production and environmental stewardship. This breach highlights a gap in their operational practices, potentially undermining their commitment to green manufacturing.
This is particularly troubling given Mercedes Benz’s esteemed position in the automotive industry. As a leader in automotive innovation, Mercedes Benz is expected to set an example in sustainable production practices.

In response to the violation, the MPCB has taken immediate action by instructing its regional officer to ensure that Mercedes-Benz brings its operations back into compliance. This will involve a thorough review of the plant’s procedures and the enforcement of corrective measures. As an immediate penalty, the MPCB has forfeited the company’s bank guarantee of ₹25 lakh.
However, Mercedes-Benz has issued a statement, emphasising its commitment to stringent global production standards, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Mercedes-Benz clarified that it has not received any formal notice from the MPCB detailing the alleged violations. The company expressed its willingness to cooperate fully with authorities, provide necessary documentation, and take corrective actions if required.

Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman, MPCB said, “We are committed to upholding high environmental standards and ensuring that all industrial activities within our jurisdiction adhere to pollution control regulations. We expect full cooperation from Mercedes-Benz in addressing these issues promptly.”
The MPCB has made it clear that they will closely monitor the plant’s efforts to rectify the situation. The board’s proactive stance serves as a reminder to all industries in Maharashtra of the importance of adhering to environmental guidelines.
