Meta has joined the Safer Internet India coalition.

As millions celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, social networking giant Meta has issued a warning about romance scams targeting users across its platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, while launching new safety features to combat online fraud.

Experts have identified a pattern where fraudsters create fake personas, often claiming to be successful professionals or military personnel, to establish romantic connections on social media platforms.

Meta Joins Hands With Safer Internet India

Meta has joined the Safer Internet India coalition, and partnered with telecommunications, financial technology, and digital service providers.

"We’re sharing product tools across Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram to help people stay safe on our apps and avoid romance scams this Valentine’s Day," the company said in a statement.

"We disrupted romance scams targeting people across the internet, including on our apps, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Quora, X and Telegram," it added.

Meta recently eliminated more than 408,000 fraudulent accounts originating from West African nations including Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin, which were reportedly engaged in international deception schemes.

These scammers build emotional relationships before attempting to extract money through fabricated emergencies or bogus investment opportunities.

Key warning signs include unusually rapid relationship progression, financial solicitations, persistent avoidance of video calls, and messages containing grammatical errors or inconsistent details.

To counter these threats, Meta has implemented several protective measures.

Meta has added safety alerts to Messenger that notify users when they're communicating with potentially suspicious accounts, particularly those operating from foreign locations.

Instagram is piloting warning systems for teenage users, with plans for broader implementation. WhatsApp users can now automatically screen calls from unknown numbers, while Meta's automated systems actively identify and remove impersonator accounts.
