The MG4 is confirmed to be the first mass-market EV with a semi-solid-state battery. It will also feature new cockpit tech made in collaboration with Oppo.
The MG4 electric hatchback, launching on August 5 in China, will be the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle with a semi-solid-state battery, SAIC’s MG brand announced.
The semi-solid-state battery, with minimal liquid electrolyte, has passed rigorous safety tests, including a 360-degree puncture test.
It delivers a CLTC-rated range of 537 km and 180 Wh/kg energy density, with 13.8 per cent better cold-weather range retention than lithium-iron-phosphate batteries.
The MG4 is poised to compete with the BYD Dolphin. Its 70 kWh battery powers a 120 kW rear-wheel-drive motor, offering potential performance advantages over the Dolphin’s 70-150 kW front-wheel-drive motors.
The updated MG4, larger than its predecessor, measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, surpassing the Dolphin’s 4,280 mm length. This is claimed to provide enhanced interior space and cargo capacity.
Its design, inspired by MG’s Cyberster, features a sculpted front and new colours, Qingbo Green and Donglai Purple.
The MG4 will also introduce the MG×Oppo cockpit system, integrating smartphone functions with voice commands, gesture navigation, and app synchronisation, enhancing user experience.
Production has begun at SAIC’s Nanjing facility for the upcoming launch. It will remain China-exclusive as of now, but it’s a positive step towards making solid-state batteries mainstream.
