The MG Cyberster is the second product under the new premium channel, following the launch of the MG M9 last week.
MG Motor India has finally launched its most performance-driven and powerful model to date, the Cyberster, entering the high-performance electric sports car space. Pricing for the MG Cyberster begins at ₹74.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India), for fresh bookings, while those who pre-booked the car, get it for ₹72.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Cyberster is the first product from MG's new luxury sub-brand, MG Select, and is being introduced in India as a completely built-up unit (CBU). The MG Cyberster is the second product under the new premium channel, following the launch of the MG M9 last week.
The MG Cyberster features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 510 bhp and 725 Nm of torque. It accommodates a 77 kWh battery pack, enabling it to accelerate 0-100 kmph in only 3.2 seconds, making it the fastest production vehicle from MG to date in terms of acceleration. The vehicle boasts a certified range of up to 580 km (CLTC), on par with bigger and pricier EVs in its class.
In terms of design, the Cyberster maintains close ties to its concept heritage. It combines retro-inspired elements with futuristic touches, such as a coupe-type low-slung profile and Kammback-type rear. The front end is aggressive, featuring sharp sculpting and prominent LED DRLs, while the side profile is highlighted by 20-inch alloy wheels and scissor-type doors, which come with radar sensors and anti-pinch functionality. Its 0.269 drag coefficient puts functional aerodynamic efficiency behind its good looks. Its soft-top convertible roof solidifies its status as a contemporary roadster.
The Cyberster's cabin offers an exceptionally high-tech and luxurious feel. It has a triple-screen layout in the form of a 10.25-inch digital driver screen, two 7-inch auxiliary screens, and an independent 7-inch vertical infotainment screen. Highlights are dual-zone climate control, ventilated and power front seats, ambient lighting, a flat-bottom steering wheel, wireless charging, and a Bose 8-speaker audio system. Even as a performance car, the interior doesn't skimp on creature comfort or usability.
Safety-wise, the Cyberster is equipped well. It features four airbags, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. These features include Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and others, aligning it with international standards for electric premium cars.
Bookings for the MG Cyberster were launched earlier this year, and the deliveries will commence from August 10 via the three MG Select showrooms in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. Even though the car is imported as a CBU, would MG be open to producing an SKD version of the car if there is sufficient demand? Well, we don’t know yet.
Priced as it is, the MG Cyberster has no direct competition in India. While more performance-oriented EVs, such as the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, or even the BMW i4, target a much more expensive segment, and ICE convertibles like the BMW Z4 or Porsche 718 Boxster don't come with electric powertrains, the Cyberster occupies a niche that's all its own.
Models | Prices (ex-showroom, India) |
---|---|
MG Cyberster | ₹74.99 lakh |
BYD Seal | ₹41-53.15 lakh |
Hyundai Ioniq 5 | ₹46.05 lakh |
Kia EV6 | ₹65.97 lakh |
BMW i4 | ₹72.5- ₹77.50 lakh |
Porsche Taycan | ₹1.69-₹2.69 crore |
Audi e-tron GT | ₹1.71-1.95 crore |
Available alternatives might be the Hyundai Ioniq 5/ Kia EV6 or high-performance versions of the BYD Seal, but neither provides the convertible roadster setup with this amount of equipment and cost.
