MG Hector Tomahawk EV vs PHEV: Key Differences

JSW MG Motor India has launched the Hector Tomahawk in two electrified avatars: a battery electric vehicle (EV) and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

Although both versions share identical footprint dimensions and overall cabin architecture, they feature key distinctions across exterior styling, interior themes, seating layouts, battery systems, charging capabilities, and pricing structures. So, let’s see what’s different.

Price in India

The Hector Tomahawk EV is priced between ₹19.49 lakh and ₹23.49 lakh (ex-showroom), offering Excite, Exclusive, and Essence trims for the seven-seater, while the five-seater is available solely in the Essence trim at ₹22.99 lakh.

The PHEV commands a higher price bracket, ranging from ₹25.69 lakh for the Exclusive seven-seater to ₹27.79 lakh for the Essence seven-seater, with no five-seat configuration on offer.

Under the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership option, the EV starts at ₹13.99 lakh, while the PHEV starts at ₹21.79 lakh (both ex-showroom). Battery rental rates are fixed at ₹4.90 per kilometre for the EV and ₹3.20 per kilometre for the PHEV.

Design

Both models measure 4,745 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,770 mm in height, built on a 2,810 mm wheelbase. Standard features across both variants include rectangular LED projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, an illuminated MG badge, roof rails, a powered tailgate, and wraparound LED tail lamps.

Front-end styling differs quite a bit between the two. The PHEV incorporates a three-dimensional grille with chrome inserts, gloss-black headlight surrounds, a bold bull-bar style silver lower bumper piece, 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers on top trims, and a contrasting white roof.

The EV uses a clean, closed-off front fascia for a sleek aesthetic, paired with a contrasting black roof. The faux grille between the headlamps gives the design some character.

Interior and Cabin Packaging

While sharing a common dashboard layout, the EV utilises a beige interior theme, whereas the PHEV adopts a brown colour scheme. Shared interior amenities include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, 256-colour ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a steering-column drive selector, and a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display on higher-tier variants.

Seating flexibility forms another primary point of difference. The EV is sold in five-seat and seven-seat formats, while the PHEV is strictly a seven-seater. Boot capacity on the five-seat EV is 610 litres, expanding to 1,053 litres when folding the second row. The seven-seat EV yields 192 litres with all seats upright and 528 litres with the third row folded. The PHEV offers 604 litres of cargo space in Exclusive trim and 579 litres in Essence trim with the third row stowed.

Powertrain, Performance and Charging

The Hector Tomahawk EV is driven by an electric motor delivering 201 bhp and 310 Nm of torque, backed by a 69.2 kWh battery pack that provides a claimed MIDC range of 517 km. It supports 90 kW DC fast charging.

The PHEV combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor, a 20.5 kWh battery, and a dedicated hybrid transmission with an e-clutch. The official power and torque figures for the PHEV have not yet been revealed.

It offers a pure electric range of over 115 km, an estimated combined fuel economy of around 40 km/l, and a total driving range exceeding 1,100 km on a full tank and battery charge. The PHEV supports up to 25 kW DC fast charging and 3.3 kW AC home charging.
