British automaker MINI has unveiled the new MINI Interaction Unit for the electric MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman. The MINI Interaction Unit was earlier showcased as part of the MINI's booth at the Gamescom 2023 expo. At the heart of the Interaction Unit is a round, 9.45-inch (240mm) Samsung OLED touch display that serves as both an instrument cluster and infotainment hub. Samsung is one of the world's leading suppliers of OLED screens, and its technology is used in smartphones like the Galaxy S23 series and the iPhone lineup.

The high-resolution OLED screen offers sharp and vibrant visuals and runs the new MINI Operating System 9, optimised for touch and voice control. The controls are presented in a smartphone-style interface, with widgets and apps accessible through swiping gestures.

Under the hood, the latest MINI Operating System is built on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software for smooth connectivity. The MINI Connected Store offers many new apps, upgrades and features on demand.

Voice control is enabled by the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant, activated by saying "Hey MINI" for the default avatar. MINI has also introduced Spike, an all-new vehicle assistant based on the Bulldog that previously appeared in TV commercials and ads.

The assistant allows hands-free control of navigation, media, phone calls, and climate control. It uses improved voice recognition and geo-fencing to learn drivers' habits and provide personalised suggestions.

The redesigned centre console positions the OLED closer to the driver, while a Head-Up Display option places key data directly in the line of sight. The gearshift has been removed to give way for an additional storage space that supports wireless charging for mobile devices.

The MINI Experience Modes apply customised graphics and colours to match different moods. Each mode has a specially designed background, from a dynamic racing theme like the Core, Mode and Go-Kart modes to chilled-out options like Timeless, Balance and Personal Mode. The optional projector can illuminate the dashboard with matching ambient lighting.

The new MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Countryman are getting the Interaction Unit and voice assistant features. In addition, the MINI Aceman will debut in April 2024, entering the premium small car segment.
