All-new SUV features advanced STLA Medium platform with hybrid and electric options, but India market misses out due to high development costs
Jeep has officially unveiled the third-generation Compass SUV at the 2025 Tannistest event in Denmark, marking a significant evolution for the American automaker's most globally available model. The completely redesigned Compass introduces substantial changes to design, technology, and powertrains whilst reinforcing Jeep's European electrification strategy.
Built on Stellantis' advanced STLA Medium platform, the new Compass represents a departure from the previous generation's architecture. This modular platform supports multiple body styles and powertrain configurations, enabling Jeep to offer three distinct electrified options: a 145bhp 48V mild-hybrid system, a 195bhp plug-in hybrid variant, and fully electric versions producing between 213bhp and 375bhp. The platform change marks the most significant technical advancement in the Compass lineage since its original launch.
The third-generation Compass measures 4,550mm in length, representing a notable increase from its predecessor. This growth translates into 55mm of additional rear legroom and expanded cargo capacity reaching 550 litres. The exterior design retains Jeep's iconic seven-slot grille whilst adopting a more upright stance, angular LED headlights, and reinforced bumpers for enhanced urban and off-road durability.
The SUV maintains its off-road credentials with approach angles of 27 degrees, breakover angles of 16 degrees, and departure angles of 31 degrees on all-wheel-drive variants. Ground clearance reaches 201mm, complemented by a water wading depth of 470mm.
Interior enhancements include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 16-inch infotainment system, representing substantial upgrades from the current generation. Standard Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, heads-up display functionality, and Matrix LED headlights feature across the range. The new Compass also introduces Digital Key technology, allowing smartphone-based vehicle access.
Production of the new Compass takes place at Stellantis' Melfi facility in Italy, contrasting with the current generation's Indian manufacturing at the Ranjangaon plant near Pune. The Ranjangaon facility, operational since 2017, previously served as the global hub for right-hand-drive Compass production and exports.
Significantly, Stellantis has confirmed the third-generation Compass will not launch in India due to commercial viability concerns. The decision stems from the estimated $400-500 million investment required for the new STLA Medium platform, which company executives deemed excessive given current Indian market conditions. Monthly Compass sales in India have declined to approximately 270 units, down from peak volumes of 1,500-2,000 units during 2017-2018.
The current second-generation Compass, manufactured locally at Ranjangaon, will continue production beyond 2026 with periodic cosmetic updates. This model features a 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine producing 168bhp and 350Nm of torque, available with manual and automatic transmission options.
For international markets, the new Compass offers comprehensive electrification. The mild-hybrid system combines a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 21kW electric motor and 48V architecture. The plug-in hybrid configuration increases output to 195hp, whilst the flagship all-wheel-drive electric variant delivers 375hp through dual motors. Range capabilities extend up to 650km on the WLTP cycle for electric versions, supported by 160kW DC fast charging.
European deliveries commence in the fourth quarter of 2025, with orders for the Altitude trim opening following the initial First Edition launch in May 2025. North American production is scheduled for 2026 at Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario. However, the absence of Indian market plans represents a significant strategic shift for Jeep, which previously positioned India as a key manufacturing and export hub.
The third-generation Compass marks Jeep's commitment to electrification whilst maintaining the brand's off-road heritage, though Indian consumers will need to rely on the current generation for the foreseeable future.
