With the launch of the new E-Class LWB, Mercedes-Benz India is set to directly challenge BMW's new 5 Series LWB.
The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long Wheelbase (LWB) is all set to enter the Indian market on October 9, 2024, with deliveries slated to begin in mid-October. This much-awaited luxury sedan made its global debut last year and was recently unveiled in India earlier this month. Siddharth even drove the new generation E-Class in Germany a while back tracing the route Bertha Benz took in the first-ever long-distance road trip and also gave a detailed first impression of the India-spec model.
The new E-Class LWB is notably larger than its predecessor, measuring 5,092 mm long, 17 mm longer than the outgoing model. It also has a 15 mm longer wheelbase, now at 3,094 mm, promising more roominess, particularly for rear-seat passengers.
The front of the car is dominated by a prominent grille featuring a 3D emblem, flanked by high-performance LED headlights. The car's side profile includes sleek new 18-inch wheels and flush door handles that add to the vehicle’s streamlined silhouette. The rear features redesigned LED taillights incorporating the iconic three-pointed star motif, coupled with a revamped bumper enhanced by chrome inlays. Buyers can choose from five exterior colour options: High Tech Silver, Polar White, Graphite Grey, Nautic Blue, and Obsidian Black.

One of the most significant updates in the new E-Class is the all-new dashboard featuring the ‘MBUX Superscreen.’ This innovative setup includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch screen for the co-driver, bringing a futuristic and driver-focused interface to the cabin. The vehicle emphasises rear-seat comfort, offering an advanced rear-seat kit that includes electrically reclining backrests and adjustable under-thigh support, which can extend up to 40mm for enhanced comfort.
The interior is filled with luxury amenities such as wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, electronically operated sun blinds, and soft pillow headrests. The vehicle is also equipped with a panoramic sunroof and 64-colour ambient lighting, creating an upscale and soothing cabin environment.

Mercedes-Benz has packed the new E-Class LWB with cutting-edge technology. It features a selfie camera, a high-end 17-speaker Burmester 4D sound system, powered front seats with memory functions, and digital AC vents for precise climate control. Additionally, the vehicle comes with a ‘Boss mode,’ which allows the front passenger seat to be adjusted for added rear legroom, enhancing the experience for chauffeured passengers.
In terms of safety, the E-Class is well-equipped, featuring 8 airbags, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Advanced safety technologies include ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, and the much-appreciated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which provides active safety features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

The new E-Class LWB will be available in two variants: the petrol-powered E 200 and the diesel-powered E 220d. The E 200 is powered by a 1999 cc, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol M254 engine that produces 201 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the E 220d variant houses a 1950 cc, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel OM654M engine delivering 194 bhp and an impressive 440 Nm of torque. Both engines are equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system featuring an integrated starter generator, which can contribute an additional 23 bhp and 205 Nm of torque for short bursts of up to 30 seconds. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a smooth 9-speed automatic transmission.
While the official prices of the new E-Class LWB are yet to be announced, we expect it to be priced above the outgoing model, which ranges from ₹76.05 lakh to ₹89.15 lakh (ex-showroom). Its closest rival is the BMW 5-Series LWB, which is currently priced at ₹72.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
