BMW Group has commenced the pre-bookings of its upcoming products, the new Mini Cooper S and the all-electric Mini Countryman at an initial token amount of ₹1 lakh ahead of its launch on July 24, 2024. Additionally, the company will also launch the new BMW 5 Series and the all-electric BMW CE 04 scooter on the same day. This will be the first time that the all-electric Mini Countryman will be available in India.
The new Mini Cooper S will come with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine as its predecessor, but in a higher state of tune. It now puts out 201 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, an increase of 26 bhp and 20 Nm, fed to the front wheels via a standard 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox. Mini claims that the Cooper S sprints from 0–100 kmph in 6.6 seconds.
The new all-electric Mini Countryman is available globally with two electric powertrains. A single-motor front-wheel-drive option that produces 201 bhp and 250 Nm of torque and dual motor with an all-wheel-drive option that packs in 309 bhp and 494 Nm of torque. Both these versions come equipped with a 66.45 kWh battery with the latter returning 462 km while the former gives 433 km on a single charge.
The Mini Countryman Electric will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), so expect it to be priced at around ₹70 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals the likes of the Kia EV6, BMW iX1, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and possibly against the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQA. The new Mini Cooper S on the other hand has no direct rivals but can compete against entry-level luxury cars such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi Q3, and even the BMW 2 Series.
