NHAI will upgrade its 1033 helpline with artificial intelligence, real-time location tracking, and smart dispatch systems to accelerate emergency response for highway travellers nationwide.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to modernise its 24-hour national helpline number, 1033, by integrating artificial intelligence, real-time location tracking, and automated emergency-dispatch systems.
The initiative aims to reduce response times for motorists facing medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, and traffic accidents across the national highway network. The project will overhaul the existing infrastructure into a next-generation platform capable of delivering faster, highly coordinated support.
First launched in 2018, the 1033 helpline is currently claimed to monitor more than 1.46 lakh kilometres of national highways and handles approximately 15,000 calls every day. Beyond emergency assistance, the service manages FASTag complaints, toll plaza disputes, and general travel inquiries in multiple regional languages.
Under the upgraded framework, real-time location capture will allow response teams to pinpoint callers instantly, eliminating delays caused by vague location descriptions. Furthermore, voice-based artificial intelligence aims to enable smooth multilingual call processing, while smart dispatch algorithms will automatically identify and assign the nearest suitable ambulance, crane, or highway patrol unit.
Despite the heavy incorporation of automated technologies and predictive algorithms, human operators will remain integral to the core decision-making process. Emergency handlers will oversee critical situations that require human judgment, ensuring that technological precision is balanced with empathetic support.
Additionally, the next-generation system will broadcast proactive safety advisories and traffic alerts directly to highway users, fostering closer coordination between helpline operators, local emergency services, and highway maintenance crews.
To build this sophisticated digital platform, the management company has issued an Expression of Interest to invite technological solutions from private sector companies and consortia. The authority is seeking expertise across voice artificial intelligence, computer-aided dispatch, public safety systems, logistics, and regional speech recognition software.
