This partnership comes on the heels of an earlier alliance between Nissan and Honda, which Mitsubishi has now joined.

In a significant move that could reshape the Japanese automotive market, Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic partnership focused on electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced software development. This partnership comes on the heels of an earlier alliance between Nissan and Honda, announced in March, which Mitsubishi has now joined.

Takao Kato, Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO, Mitsubishi Motors said, "Nissan and Honda’s discussions on a possible partnership have progressed, and we have decided to participate in this framework. Collaboration with partners is essential in today's automotive industry, which is undergoing rapid changes due to technological innovations such as electrification and intelligence. We believe that we can discover new possibilities in a variety of fields through collaboration among the three companies.”

The MoU outlines the companies' intentions to jointly develop electric vehicles and software, enhancing their capabilities in autonomous driving, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. This partnership will also focus on the development of new batteries and electric drivetrains, including shared motors and inverters. By pooling their resources, the three automakers aim to accelerate development, reduce costs, and compete more effectively against burgeoning Chinese EV manufacturers.

In a related announcement, Nissan and Honda revealed their agreement to collaborate on software-defined vehicles (SDVs), which will integrate advanced software to enhance vehicle performance and user experience. This includes efforts in autonomous driving technology and connectivity, underscoring the importance of software in the next generation of vehicles.

Nissan and Honda also plan to share vehicle models to complement each other's line-ups, covering both combustion-engine vehicles and EVs. While Mitsubishi's involvement in this specific strategy remains to be detailed, it is clear that the broader alliance will enable the companies to achieve significant economies of scale and broaden their market reach.

The partnership is a strategic response to the rapid rise of Chinese EV manufacturers, who have been producing more affordable and diverse electric cars. By joining forces, Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi aim to streamline their development processes and compete more effectively on a global scale.

Despite the potential for new developments, the focus of the partnership appears to be on mainstream vehicles, particularly crossovers and SUVs, rather than sports cars. This pragmatic approach reflects the current market dynamics, where consumer demand and profitability are strongest in the SUV and crossover segments.

This new alliance follows another significant collaboration among Japanese automakers earlier this year. Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru announced their commitment to prolonging the life of internal combustion engines through hybridisation and the development of carbon-neutral fuels. These concurrent efforts highlight the diverse strategies Japanese carmakers are employing to navigate the transition to sustainable transportation.
