Hyundai Mobis announced Monday the development of an electric vehicle (EV) battery safety system that automatically releases fire suppressant when battery cell ignition occurs, preventing flames from spreading to neighbouring cells.
The innovative technology, according to a report by IANS, incorporates heat-resistant materials and features a fire suppression mechanism built directly into the battery housing. Hyundai Mobis stated it has submitted patent applications both domestically and internationally for this technology.
The auto parts division of Hyundai Motor Group explained that their solution targets thermal runaway -- the uncontrollable rapid overheating process -- at its source, rather than merely slowing the spread of heat and flames.
According to Hyundai Mobis, this represents an industry-first innovation that has not yet been commercialised by any manufacturer worldwide.
"As more large EVs with improved driving range appear, the safety standards for battery systems are becoming more stringent," Park Yong-jun, vice president of Hyundai Mobis' battery system research division, was quoted as saying.
"We will integrate hardware and software to develop advanced battery systems that meet and exceed global standards, and introduce them to the global market."
In related news, Hyundai Mobis hosted its annual mobility technology exhibition in the United States last week, showcasing its strategic vision and investment plans for the North American market.
The company's fourth Mobis Mobility Day took place in Detroit, highlighting its latest advancements in software-defined vehicles, electrification, and electronic components.
The event attracted over 200 attendees, including representatives from North American automotive manufacturers and startups.
Engineers and staff from Hyundai Mobis' North American research and development center led the presentations, providing comprehensive insights into the company's global innovation strategy.
With a considerable portion of its recent global orders originating from North American clients, Hyundai Mobis indicated it plans to strengthen partnerships with local startups to jointly develop cutting-edge technologies and enhance its responsiveness to market demands.
