He was also awarded a Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2007 for his contributions to the economy through the automobile industry.

Osamu Suzuki, the transformative leader of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation, passed away on December 25, 2024, at 94. The company confirmed the cause of death as lymphoma. Suzuki’s remarkable tenure as president, CEO, and later chairman spanned over four decades, during which he steered the automaker through pivotal moments in its history, turning Suzuki Motor into a global force and pioneering the automobile market in India.

Suzuki’s career was defined by his ability to manage costs with an uncompromising eye for efficiency. Known for his legendary frugality, he famously implemented measures such as lowering factory ceilings to save on air-conditioning costs and flying economy class well into his later years. These practices became emblematic of Suzuki Motor’s operational philosophy and contributed significantly to the company’s financial resilience.

Under Suzuki’s leadership, Suzuki Motor excelled in producing Japan’s signature compact, 660-cc cars that benefited from favourable tax policies. With their affordability and practicality, these vehicles became a cornerstone of Suzuki Motor’s success in its domestic market.

Suzuki’s leadership came into sharp focus in the 1970s, when the company faced a crisis due to stricter emissions regulations. By persuading Toyota to supply compliant engines, Suzuki ensured the company's survival during a turbulent period. This strategic collaboration paved the way for future successes, including the launch of the Alto in 1979, a model that became a commercial triumph and enhanced Suzuki’s global standing.

Perhaps Suzuki’s most enduring legacy lies in India, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the country’s nascent automobile market. In the early 1980s, Suzuki took a bold decision to invest a year’s worth of the company’s earnings to partner with Maruti, a government-controlled automaker, to create India’s “people’s car.”

The partnership initially faced hurdles, with Suzuki Motor almost missing the opportunity. A chance encounter with a Suzuki director in India revived the talks, leading to a rapid agreement. In 1983, the Maruti 800—a hatchback based on the Suzuki Alto—was launched, becoming an instant hit.

Today, Maruti Suzuki commands approximately 40 per cent of India’s car market, a testament to Suzuki’s foresight and willingness to take risks. Beyond introducing affordable vehicles, Suzuki implemented workplace equality measures that were ground-breaking in class-conscious India, including open-plan offices, unified canteens, and standardized uniforms for all employees.

Despite his many accomplishments, not all of Suzuki’s ventures were successful. A much-publicized alliance with Volkswagen in 2009, billed as a strategic partnership, ended in acrimony. The two companies clashed over issues of control and strategic direction, leading to a protracted legal battle. Suzuki Motor eventually prevailed, reclaiming its shares and extricating itself from the deal, but the episode underscored the challenges of cross-cultural corporate collaborations.

Osamu Suzuki retired as CEO in 2016, passing the baton to his son Toshihiro, and remained chairman until 2021. Even after stepping down from official roles, he continued to serve as an advisor, staying connected to the company he had transformed. Known for his wit and dedication, Suzuki often joked that he would remain at the company "forever," a sentiment that reflects his deep commitment.

Suzuki’s legacy is multifaceted. He will be remembered as a pioneer who helped shape India’s automotive landscape, a strategist who navigated crises with resourcefulness, and a leader who instilled a culture of efficiency and discipline at Suzuki Motor. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the global automobile industry.
