The production version of the C5 Aircross is slated to debut in 2025.
At the 2024 Paris Motor Show, Citroën introduced its latest concept vehicle, the C5 Aircross, offering a preview of the next generation of its popular SUV. This unveiling signals a routine update and a significant transformation for the model, which will feature bold new design elements and an electric powertrain option. The C5 Aircross Concept offers a glimpse into Citroën’s future, as the French automaker continues to push towards electrification and advanced design.
The first thing that stands out about the C5 Aircross Concept is its striking new design. The previous model's once soft and rounded edges have given way to a boxy, imposing silhouette. Citroën has described this aesthetic as a "dense, muscular, and organic block," emphasizing a sturdy and rugged presence on the road. The new model is 150 mm longer than its predecessor, now measuring 4650 mm, which benefits passenger space and cargo capacity.
Despite its squared-off profile, Citroën insists that aerodynamics was a key consideration in the vehicle's development. Subtle design tweaks, such as the carefully shaped curves and fin-like taillights, reportedly contribute to a more aerodynamic flow, improving efficiency without compromising the SUV's bold new look.
One of the most notable aspects of the C5 Aircross Concept is its electrification. Built on Stellantis' STLA Medium platform, the concept car is designed to accommodate various powertrains, from petrol to hybrid, and importantly, fully electric. The fully electric version, expected to be dubbed the e-C5 Aircross, has already sparked considerable interest. The model will likely come with two battery pack options: a 73 kWh and a larger 98 kWh pack, which Citroën claims could deliver a range of up to 700 km.
This places it in direct competition with other electric SUVs like the Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008, which share the same platform. Buyers will also have the choice between single-motor front-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations.
For those not ready to leap to fully electric, Citroën is also expected to offer a mild-hybrid version. This version will likely feature the familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, producing 134 bhp, a reliable option seen across several Stellantis models.
The size increase of the C5 Aircross Concept isn’t just for show—its expanded dimensions are meant to further cement its reputation as a family-friendly vehicle. While Citroën has yet to reveal the specifics of the interior, they have teased that it will focus on comfort, dubbing it a "wellness area" and a "cocoon on wheels." This suggests an emphasis on high-quality materials, enhanced seating comfort, and a quiet, serene cabin experience.
Advanced technology will likely be a central feature of the interior, with Citroën hinting at a cutting-edge infotainment system and a range of driver-assistance systems. Given the vehicle’s flagship status, it will likely come with top-tier features, aligning with Citroën’s push towards offering a more premium feel in its upper-tier models.
With the C5 X sedan being discontinued, the new C5 Aircross is poised to become Citroën’s flagship vehicle. This marks an important shift for the brand, as SUVs continue to dominate the automotive market. The production version of the C5 Aircross is slated to debut in 2025, and as that date approaches, more details about the model’s powertrain options, interior design, and technology are expected to be revealed.
