Passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers saw record May volumes, driven by lower GST and improved financing access.
Domestic passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose 27.3 per cent year-on-year to a record 4,38,854 units in May, reflecting stronger demand supported by lower GST rates and improved access to financing, according to data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday. Passenger vehicle dispatches stood at 3,44,656 units in the same month last year.
Two-wheeler wholesales also registered growth, rising 14.8 per cent to 19,02,209 units compared with 16,57,116 units a year earlier. Three-wheeler dispatches increased 31.1 per cent to 70,720 units, up from 53,942 units in May 2025.

Within the passenger vehicle segment, utility vehicles continued to drive volumes, growing 24.8 per cent to 2,45,549 units from 1,96,821 units a year earlier. Passenger car dispatches rose 28.8 per cent to 1,20,975 units, while van sales increased 7.4 per cent to 13,240 units.
"Passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded the highest ever sales of May in 2026, with high double-digit growth in each segment," Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said in a statement.
"Lower base effect of previous May and demand created due to reduced GST rates, with easier financing, is again getting reflected in higher offtake this month," he added.
In the two-wheeler category, motorcycle dispatches were up 7.2 per cent at 11,13,973 units compared with 10,39,156 units in the same period last year. Scooter sales recorded faster growth, rising 27.4 per cent to 7,39,667 units from 5,80,696 units.
Overall vehicle wholesales across segments increased 16.8 per cent to 23,52,693 units in May, as compared with 20,14,158 units in the corresponding month last year.
