Passenger Vehicle Dispatches Rise 36.5% To Record August High: SIAM

Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose 36.5 per cent year-on-year to 439,309 units in August 2026, compared with 321,901 units in the same period last year, said data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Tuesday. The growth is the highest-ever August sales for the passenger vehicle segment, with autmakers benefiting from a stronger demand environment and a relatively lower base in August 2025.

Two-wheeler sales also recorded their highest August volume, rising 10.5 per cent year-on-year to 2,034,698 units from 1,841,954 units a year earlier. Three-wheeler dispatches increased 22.8 per cent to 93,764 units, compared with 76,324 units in August 2025.

"Passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers have recorded the highest ever sales of August in 2026. In August 2026, Passenger Vehicles posted sales of 4.39 lakhs units with double digit growth of 36.5 per cent, three-wheelers sales recorded 0.94 lakh units with growth of 22.8 per cent, and two-wheelers sales logged 20.35 lakhs units with growth of 10.5 compared to the same period of last August 2025," Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said in a statement.

Menon added the latest numbers indicate that India's automobile industry is going through a period of robust growth, while cautioning that the lower base of the previous year has also contributed to the strong year-on-year increase.

"India's automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase," said Menon, adding that the growth in August has been supported by a lower base of previous year.

"The broader demand environment remains fundamentally healthy. Strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains are creating a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories," he noted.

According to SIAM, conditions remained healthy across vehicle categories, with consumer confidence, rural demand and financing conditions supporting the market. The increasing adoption of alternative powertrains is also contributing to the changing dynamics of the automotive industry.

Notably, the August performance comes ahead of the key festive period, when vehicle purchases typically receive a seasonal boost. Automakers and dealers are expected to look to the upcoming months to sustain the momentum recorded across passenger vehicles and two- and three-wheelers.

"Festive demand is also expected to provide an additional boost, resulting in healthy Q2 numbers", Menon further noted.

The strong August dispatch figures indicate that manufacturers entered the festive period with momentum across major vehicle categories. 

However, the extent to which this translates into sustained retail demand will be key for assessing the underlying strength of the market beyond the impact of the favourable comparison base.
