PVs sales in the domestic market reached 4,37,312 units last month, a jump of 25.4 per cent on the 3,48,847 units sold in April 2025.

The automobile industry kicked off the new financial year on a strong note, with passenger vehicles (PV) and three-wheelers both clocking their highest-ever monthly sales figures in April 2026. Data published by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Thursday showed broad-based double-digit growth across all major vehicle categories.

PVs sales in the domestic market reached 4,37,312 units last month, a jump of 25.4 per cent on the 3,48,847 units sold in April 2025. Three-wheelers posted even sharper growth, rising 32.8 per cent year-on-year to 65,668 units, against 49,441 units in the same month a year earlier.

Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, said the industry had carried strong demand through into the first month of FY2026-27. He pointed to the momentum built during the second half of the previous financial year as a key factor, though he flagged rising commodity prices linked to ongoing disruption in West Asia as a potential concern. Despite this, he said, underlying demand had held up well.

Two-wheelers also had a strong showing, with domestic sales climbing 28.4 per cent to 18,72,691 units compared to 14,58,784 units in April 2025. Combined production across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles totalled 29,22,427 units for the month.

Within the three-wheeler segment, passenger carriers grew 31.1 per cent to 52,655 units, while goods carriers surged 45.1 per cent to 11,806 units. E-cart sales were up 55 per cent to 479 units, though e-rickshaws bucked the trend, slipping 12.3 per cent to 728 units.

In two-wheelers, scooters rose 26.2 per cent to 6,91,993 units and motorcycles grew 30.6 per cent to 11,38,452 units. Mopeds recorded a more modest 9 per cent gain, reaching 42,246 units.

SIAM noted that sales data for several manufacturers, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Auto, were not available, and that Tata Motors' domestic passenger vehicle figures had been included only within the overall category total.
