Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon the citizens of India to exercise greater restraint in their consumption of petroleum products. Speaking at an event on Sunday, the Prime Minister highlighted the growing concerns surrounding global energy supply chains, primarily driven by the ongoing geopolitical instability in West Asia.
Addressing the gathering in Hyderabad, the Prime Minister emphasised that petrol, diesel, and natural gas should be used judiciously. He noted that reducing the consumption of imported petroleum products is essential to protecting the nation’s foreign exchange reserves. By limiting unnecessary fuel use, the Prime Minister suggested that India could better insulate its economy from the volatile price fluctuations and supply disruptions currently affecting international markets.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came during the inauguration and foundation stone laying of several key development projects. These initiatives spanned various sectors, including manufacturing, connectivity, and energy. Notable projects mentioned included the expansion of the Hyderabad to Panaji Economic Corridor, various railway infrastructure upgrades, and the establishment of a new petroleum terminal in Hyderabad by Indian Oil.
Beyond the immediate call for conservation, the Prime Minister underscored India’s strategic shift towards energy independence. He pointed to the significant progress made in the renewable energy sector over the past decade, particularly the rapid expansion of solar power capacity.
He further detailed the government's multi pronged approach to strengthening energy security, which includes increasing the percentage of ethanol blending in petrol and expanding the reach of cleaner fuels like CNG and LPG.
