Porsche has patented new technology that allows racing stripes and visual data to appear on a car's exterior automatically when switching drive modes.
Porsche has long been popular for its automotive customisation, offering enthusiasts hundreds of unique paint finishes. However, a recent patent filing suggests the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is moving beyond static colours toward dynamic exterior technology. The company is developing a system that allows decorative elements, such as racing stripes, to appear or disappear based on the vehicle’s mode.
The technology relies on a specialised coating described as ‘e-paper’, which functions similarly to the electrochromic glass used in modern panoramic sunroofs. By applying an electrical current to specific layers of the vehicle's surface, the car can alter its appearance almost instantly. According to the patent diagrams, this would allow a Porsche 911 to display prominent racing stripes the moment the driver selects Sport Plus mode, providing an immediate visual signal of the car’s high-performance configuration.

Beyond mere aesthetics, the patent suggests several practical applications for this adaptable surface. For electric vehicles, the technology could be utilised to display the current state of charge to the owner as they approach the car. Porsche also envisions applying these smart coatings to active aerodynamic components, such as rear spoilers, splitters, and side blades, to highlight these features when they are deployed.
If this patent moves into production, the days of vinyl decals on premium cars may be numbered. However, initially at least, this tech will most likely be offered as an optional extra, at exorbitant prices, of course.
