With the 4 E-Tech and 5 E-Tech, Renault will revive two of its old and iconic nameplates.
Renault has teased a new electric vehicle called the 4 E-Tech. The French marque is a spree of reviving old nameplates as electric vehicles and this new one is the second of the lot, following the 5 E-Tech. While the Renault 5 name came back after 28 years, the Renault 4 is coming back after 30 years.
The French marque has only revealed a few images of the 4 E-Tech but those images suggest its design will hark back to the Renault 4 that was first introduced in 1961. More than eight million units of the original 4 were produced between 1961 and 1994.
The Renault 4 E-Tech measures 4.14 metres in length and is around 220 mm longer than the 5 E-Tech. Like the latter, the 4 E-Tech is also based on Ampere’s – Renault’s EV subsidiary’s – AmpR small platform. Unlike the 5 E-Tech, the 4 E-Tech will be built at the firm’s Maubeuge facility in France.
Like the original Renault 4, the 4 E-Tech will have a long, rectangular grille but with modern touches like twin lightbars at the top and bottom edges of the grille as well as an illuminated logo. Furthermore, it gets a modernised version of the original 4’s vertical, three-part taillamps. It also retains the iconic rear quarter window. While modern cars don’t require bumper buffers, the 4 E-Tech gets vertical overriders in a nod to the original Renault 4. It also gets a retractable fabric roof, a mini spoiler above the rear window and a low-loading lip for the boot.
The Renault 4 E-Tech will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 15. Renault says its new electric vehicle will go on sale in Europe in 2025. It is highly unlikely to come to India but would you like to see Renault exploring the possibility to get this or the 5 E-Tech to India?
