Renault To Launch Duster Strong Hybrid In India On October 17

Renault will launch the Duster's long-awaited strong-hybrid variant in India on October 17, according to a company teaser cited by Autocar India and Rushlane, positioning the E-Tech 160 powertrain as the successor to the diesel engine that once defined the SUV in this market.

The teaser carries the line "Dear Diesel, thank you for the ride, we will take it from here," a pointed reference to the previous-generation Duster, which relied heavily on its diesel engine before it was withdrawn from sale in 2022 amid tightening emission norms. 

The hybrid pairs a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery, delivering a combined output Renault has badged as 160 bhp. The company says the system can run on electric power alone for up to 80% of city driving, using a clutchless multi-mode gearbox rather than a conventional automatic. Pricing and certified fuel-efficiency figures have not been announced; Renault has said only that both will follow closer to launch.

The hybrid's arrival matters more than usual for Renault, whose Duster sales have fallen sharply since the vehicle's March launch. Wholesale volumes dropped from 2,359 units in April, when the Duster accounted for 44% of Renault India's total sales, to just 406 units in August, according to SIAM data. 

The hybrid enters a segment still dominated by Toyota's technology, which held over 82% share of India's roughly 1.23-lakh-unit strong-hybrid car market in the last financial year, led by the Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Renault's system, with a larger battery and a claimed 40hp advantage over rivals such as the Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara and Victoris, will need to translate that specification edge into competitive pricing given that comparable hybrids are priced between roughly ₹16.5 lakh and ₹20 lakh, ex-showroom.

Renault India's vice-president of sales and marketing, Francisco Hidalgo, said earlier this year that the company had already sold out its planned hybrid production for 2026 and was "actively working on increasing capacity" at its Chennai plant, where the Duster is built alongside its platform-sibling, the Nissan Tekton. 

For a manufacturer whose Indian market share has slipped below 1% over the past decade, the hybrid represents Renault's clearest attempt yet at reversing that decline.
