It seems like Apple is delaying things by a year.
It has been a couple of years since Apple launched an iPhone SE. The last SE was launched in 2022, but now, there could be a while before there is a new SE. Earlier reports had claimed a launch for a new iPhone SE in 2024, but now it seems like Apple is delaying things by a year.
The report claims that it will be based on the iPhone 14 design and will feature an OLED screen. This means it will be the first iPhone SE smartphone with an OLED screen instead of an LCD. Since 2016, when Apple first introduced the idea of an affordable iPhone with the SE, it has essentially remixed a design of an older iPhone and updated it with newer internals like the chipset and camera sensor.
As of now, there are three display makers who are vying for Apple’s orders for the next iPhone SE. Samsung is reportedly offering the lowest price at $30 per panel while BOE is offering $35 and Tianma is asking for $40. None have won the contract, but Apple is reportedly countering by offering just $20 per panel, so negotiations are still ongoing.
Design-wise, these phones will be similar to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. A 6.1-inch screen should be expected with a 1170x2532 pixel resolution and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. Apple could also opt for a ceramic shield on these phones.
News outlets from Korea claim that Samsung Display and BOE have good yields, but Tianma is not likely a serious contender because it is the costliest of the lot and it has the poorest yields. Samsung also made the panel for the iPhone 14, so it probably has the tooling to make this even cheaper or can use existing inventory.
Samsung can also undercut BOE because it can always make a profit with the higher-end models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. Apple will likely use the A18 processor in this phone, which will debut with the iPhone 16 Pro series, and it is likely that it will also be the first SE model with dual cameras.
