Rox 01, a Chinese plug-in hybrid SUV that’s over 5.2 metres long, has been patented in India. With 469 bhp, 1,226 km range and rugged luxury, it may rival the Land Rover Defender.
A new plug-in hybrid SUV named Rox 01 has been patented in India. If launched, this premium vehicle could be a potential competitor to the popular Land Rover Defender. The Rox 01 is developed by Rox Motor, a new China-based car brand backed by big players like Xiaomi, Sequoia Capital, and Tencent.
Although an official India launch is yet to be confirmed, the patent filing strongly suggests that Rox Motor is seriously considering entering the Indian market. There are also speculations that this SUV could come in India through JSW Motors, which has already patented and teased multiple Chinese SUVs.
The version patented in India cleverly combines design elements from both the Rox 01 and Adamas models available globally. Notably, it includes a LiDAR unit mounted on the windshield, hinting at highly advanced driver assistance systems.
In terms of size and presence, the Rox 01 is a proper full-size SUV stretching over 5.2 metres in length. Its boxy, upright stance, massive grille, large headlamps, straight roofline, side-hinged tailgate, roof rails, and rear-mounted spare wheel give it a commanding appearance ideal for both city roads and tough terrains.
The interior promises luxury and versatility with two seating layouts: 2+2+2 and 2+3+2. The 2+2+2 configuration features premium lounge seats equipped with massage, heating, ventilation, and ottoman functions.

Premium equipment like Nappa leather upholstery, a massive 15.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, rear entertainment screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, premium audio system, soft-close doors, and three-zone climate control comes standard on the China-spec model.
Powering the Rox 01 in China is a plug-in hybrid system comprising a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 56 kWh battery pack. Together they deliver a robust 469 bhp and 740 Nm of torque through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. It promises an electric-only range of approximately 235 km and a total range of up to 1,226 km, making it one of the most efficient long-range hybrid SUVs.
Additional highlights include advanced ADAS features, multiple airbags, 360-degree camera, adjustable air suspension, and off-road aids like crawl control. The LiDAR further boosts its autonomous capabilities.
