20 riders set out to preserve 12 traditional practices across the Himalayan state until October.

Royal Enfield is back with the fourth edition of The Great Himalayan Exploration. The motorcycling expedition will witness 20 riders ride across Himachal Pradesh and document the state's traditional cultural practices over the next six weeks. The expedition is being conducted in partnership with UNESCO, and was flagged off by Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Shashank Gupta and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sidharth Sharma, from the Himalayan Hub in Theog, Shimla. The expedition will run until October 9, with participants divided into four groups following different routes across the state.

The fourth edition will feature 12 unique cultural practices across Himachal Pradesh. Riders will document traditions such as Himachali Dham, a ceremonial vegetarian feast prepared by hereditary Boti chefs and served on leaf plates during weddings and festivals. The exploration will also cover Chamba Thaal, ornate brass platters crafted for religious ceremonies, and Kangra Paintings, an 18th-19th century miniature art form known for detailed work with natural pigments and gold.

Royal Enfield's rider-researchers will also study Kath-Kuni Architecture, an earthquake-resistant construction method using interlocking deodar wood and stone without mortar. The documentation includes Spiti Jewellery, traditional silver and turquoise ornaments reflecting Tibetan influences.

Other practices being recorded include the Himachali Topi, a distinctive woollen cap worn by men, and Kullu Dussehra, a week-long festival where over 300 village deities gather to honour Lord Raghunath.

Royal Enfield will capture the fourth expedition in a four-part documentary series presented by National Geographic. The series, set to premiere on JioHotstar, will continue the documentation format established in previous editions of the exploration program.

This year's focus on Himachal Pradesh follows previous expeditions that have documented traditional practices across different regions of the Indian Himalayas, creating a growing archive of the region's living cultural heritage.
