Bengaluru-based electric scooter startup Simple Energy seems to be readying the launch of a new, more family-oriented scooter. A design patent, filed in June this year, has recently appeared in the Intellectual Property India database, which allows public access to applications made to the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
No specifications or performance-related information is available yet, but the design representation of the bike shows some interesting details. It has a simpler, more traditional design than the company’s current portfolio which is made up of two sporty performance scooters, the Simple One and Simple OneS.
The purported upcoming Simple Energy scooter appears to be sleek and modern, with a flat seat that looks long enough for two adults, also allowing for storage space below it. A tiny backrest at the rear should offer the passenger some comfort. These features indicate a more practical target use case and positioning for the new model, than with Simple Energy’s current offerings. Dual headlamps can be seen embedded in the front apron, connected by what could be an LED DRL lightbar. The diagram also shows a five-spoke wheel design.
The filing suggests that the design of this upcoming model at least is at an advanced stage, though there’s no official indication yet of when it might launch. The move to enter this strategic, high-volume electric scooter segment comes as Simple Energy is preparing to go public in 2027. The company also recently raised a $10 million financing round with the purpose of expanding its retail network across India
When launched, the purported family scooter will likely compete with the popular Ather Rizta, TVS iQube, Hero Vida VX2, Bajaj Chetak, Ola S1 X, Kinetic DX Electric, Suzuki e-Access, and others.
Interestingly, four additional designs for components were registered at roughly the same time, including one “battery top lid”, one “headstock of a vehicle”, one “front shroud of a vehicle”, and one “lady footrest of a vehicle”. They are not necessarily related to the same upcoming scooter, and could be signs that additional new models are being developed.
Simple Energy was also recently in the news for developing what it called India's first rare-earth-free electric scooter motor, which should help insulate it from supply chain issues arising from a shortage and import restrictions on rare earth elements.
