Siri AI Overhaul, Podcast Playback Improvements Come to CarPlay With iOS 27.2

While CarPlay itself has not had any major update, these iOS features make it more functional and convenient.

Apple’s long-delayed Siri AI voice assistant functionality makes Siri more interactive and responsive

Apple has released iOS 27.2, a significant update to the current version of its iPhone operating system, and many of the changes and improvements affect the experience CarPlay users will have when using its apps and features. In addition to some general design improvements, there are two major changes which people who use the default Podcasts app and the Siri voice assistant will notice.

Siri AI has received a major capability boost with this update. Apple’s long-delayed voice assistant functionality makes Siri more interactive and responsive, in line with competing offerings. Conversations can now be built on context from previous interactions, and Siri will remember things such as search results that a user engaged with. Personal context comes in from a user’s messages, emails, calendar, voicemail, photos, and even Safari browser history. Moreover, Siri AI is now available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, in addition to English.

This means CarPlay users can perform more actions hands-free to reduce distraction, such as asking for information from a calendar appointment or drafting an email and attaching specific photos. It can also carry on natural-language conversations allowing users to look up information online and then string together a series of actions such as saving a reminder or setting a navigation endpoint.

Commuters who often listen to podcasts while driving will now have a better-organised podcast library, which clearly segregates new episodes from ones you might be in the middle of and want to continue listening to. This replaces the single “Up Next” queue which mixed these with recently released episodes of users’ subscriptions.

Siri AI remains unavailable in the EU due to ongoing regulatory discussions related to user data privacy, and the company also says that certain features that require communication with remote servers are subject to unspecified daily usage limits.

iPhone users will also notice other minor changes that carry over into the CarPlay UI, such as an overhauled Apple Music app with a new icon and colour scheme. Other iOS updates beyond CarPlay include Apple’s new SynthID watermarking feature to help detect edited or artificially generated images, AI suggestions in the Messages app, new smart home controls, and improvements to the Games and Apple TV apps.

CarPlay itself got its last major update with last year's iOS 26 release, and has had progressive feature updates since then, including support for AI chatbot apps and video playback when parked.
