This comes as global EV makers increasingly look to India for cost-effective and strategic sourcing.
Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd, commonly known as Sona Comstar, has issued a formal clarification regarding recent media reports that claimed the company was in advanced talks to supply electric vehicle components to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. Acko Drive has reached out to BYD India for clarification.
In its exchange filing, the company stated that while it is engaged in discussions with several potential customers in India and globally, these are part of its regular business development efforts and do not constitute any material development at this point. Sona Comstar clarified that should any significant event or transaction occur in the future that meets the criteria for disclosure, the company will make appropriate announcements in line with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.

This response comes amid growing interest in India’s automotive supply chain, especially as global electric vehicle manufacturers seek local sourcing partners to meet cost, regulatory, and geopolitical considerations.
Since the news broke, Sona Comstar witnessed a sharp spike in trading volumes on July 17. Over 2.47 crore shares were traded on the NSE, significantly higher than its two-week average of 32 lakh shares. On the BSE, trading volumes also surged to 45.25 lakh shares, well above the average of 1.41 lakh shares recorded over the same period.
The heightened activity follows the company’s Q4 FY2025 earnings, where it reported a net profit of ₹164 crore, up 11 per cent year-on-year from ₹148 crore. However, revenue from operations declined slightly by 2 per cent to ₹865 crore from ₹884 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
In a key development during the quarter, Sona Comstar secured a ₹1,520 crore order from an existing customer, a North American EV OEM, to supply rotor-embedded differential sub-assemblies and epicyclic geartrains for a new electric passenger vehicle.
