The new PS5 Slim boasts a compact design, updated ports, and accessories
Sony has introduced the new PlayStation 5 Slim in the Indian market, with a starting price of Rs 44,990. The gaming console will be available for purchase from 5 April onwards. This launch marks an update to the original PS5 console, which was released in November 2020, featuring a more compact design that was previously only available in the United States.
The PlayStation 5 Slim will be offered in two variants: one with a disc drive and a digital version without a disc drive. The console features several design changes, including four cover panels (two on each side), slits, and a glossy top. Additionally, Sony has incorporated a bulge on the side housing the disc drive, allowing for easier removal and replacement.
The PS5 Slim boasts impressive technical specifications, including:
External dimensions (excluding projecting parts): Approx. 358 × 96 × 216 mm (width × height × depth)
Mass: Approx. 3.2 kg

Input/Output (Back of Console): USB Type-A port (Super-Speed USB 10Gbps) x2
Networking: Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax
The port selection has also been updated, with the new model featuring two Type C ports instead of the single Type A and Type C ports found on the original PS5. The variant with the disc drive is priced at Rs 54,990, while the digital edition is available for Rs 44,990. Both versions will be sold through offline and online retailers.
The box set includes a horizontal stand, although the vertical stand will be sold separately at an additional cost. This differs from the original PS5, which came with a stand that allowed users to position the console both horizontally and vertically.
Since its initial launch, Sony has sold more than 48 million units of the PS5 globally, with over 3.5 million units sold in 2023 alone, making it the best-selling video game console since the pandemic. These impressive sales figures demonstrate the continued demand for the PlayStation 5 and its position as a leader in the gaming industry.
In addition to the PlayStation 5 Slim, Sony is reportedly working on a more powerful PS5 Pro, which is expected to launch in the United States during the last quarter of the year. The PS5 Pro is said to offer up to 45% better graphical performance compared to the current model and may support AI-based upscaling techniques and possibly even native 8K resolution.
