Spotify on Android Auto introduces a new feature that enables passengers to collaboratively build playlists in real time.
Spotify’s Android Auto app has received a new update which introduces the popular Jam feature to transform in-car music experiences.
The update, version 9.0.58.596, rolled out recently for Android users.
The Jam feature, now integrated into Spotify’s Android Auto interface, allows multiple users to collaborate on playlists in real time.
From the Now Playing screen, a QR code appears on the car’s display, enabling passengers to scan and join the session. They can add songs to the shared queue, making road trips more interactive.
This marks the first time Spotify’s Jam feature, previously available on desktops and smartphones, has been adapted for in-car displays.
The update leverages Google’s Car App Library, announced at I/O 2025, which offers developers greater flexibility for richer in-car media experiences.
Interestingly, Google confirmed at I/O 2025 that similar updates are planned for apps like Amazon Music and YouTube Music, signaling a trend towards more interactive in-car entertainment.
During Jam sessions, the driver remains the host, retaining full control. They can remove contributors at any time, ensuring the playlist stays on track without distractions.
A Spotify Premium subscription is required to start or host a Jam, though free users can join and contribute songs.
Beyond Jam, the update includes a revamped interface with larger buttons and clearer menus for easier navigation. A prominent “Downloads” section simplifies offline playback, ideal for areas with poor connectivity.
A new floating Search shortcut also provides quicker access to Spotify’s search interface, enhancing usability while driving.
As vehicles become entertainment hubs, Spotify’s redesigned app positions it as a leader in in-car audio. The Jam feature’s arrival on Android Auto sets a new standard for collaborative music sharing on the road.
