Elon Musk's space-based Internet company Starlink has secured regulatory approval to launch operations in India, with services likely to commence within the next two months, a new report says. The satellite broadband provider has unveiled competitive pricing for the Indian market, featuring a monthly subscription of ₹3,000 for unlimited data access and a one-time equipment fee of ₹33,000 for the satellite dish hardware, the Business Standard report added.
The pricing framework demonstrates consistency with Starlink's expansion strategy across South Asia. Similar plans have been implemented in Bangladesh and Bhutan, where the satellite dish equipment carries the same ₹33,000 price tag.
To encourage adoption, the Musk-owned company will provide a complimentary one-month trial period with each device purchase, allowing potential customers to test the service quality before committing to regular monthly subscriptions.
Starlink's low Earth orbit satellite network promises to deliver 600-700 Gbps of bandwidth capacity to areas where traditional fibre optic and cellular infrastructure remains inadequate.
The service categorically aims to bridge the digital divide in India's remote and rural regions, where establishing conventional broadband networks has proven economically challenging for telecommunications providers, news agency ANI reported.
The satellite Internet service's entry into India's digital landscape is said to stiffen competition within the telecommunications industry while providing key connectivity solutions for educational institutions, businesses, and communities in geographically isolated areas.
This development is in line with India's national digital inclusion initiatives and efforts to expand internet accessibility across the country's diverse terrain.
Notably, earlier estimates from former Starlink India leadership had projected significantly higher costs, with first-year expenses reaching ₹1.58 lakh, subsequently reducing to ₹1.15 lakh annually.
The current plan represents a substantial cut from these initial projections.
Meanwhile, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has expressed concerns to telecommunications regulators regarding proposed satellite communication policies.
