Just basic things to keep you sane on your rides and daily commutes

It is no secret that temperatures are soaring new heights daily. A heatwave is spreading across various parts of the country and motoring in these times is going to be quite taxing. So, here are some suggestions for two-wheeler motorists to stay protected from the harsh climate and it all starts with the basics:

Summer-appropriate Riding Gear

Mesh is your friend in these trying times as you want your gear to be as breathable as possible. Hence, a good mesh jacket, riding denims and perforated short gloves will do the trick, after you wear a proper helmet obviously. Make sure that you aren’t wearing any cotton or thick material clothing inside the protective gear as it will make you stuffy and cause nausea. You are better off with carrying a T-shirt in a backpack and just wearing nylon base layers underneath on the rides.

Summer

More so, try and source a dark smoke visor for your helmet or wear shades to cut out the harmful rays. You ideally want your eyes to stay cool and focused on the road, not squinting to avoid the bright light. Also, one might want to wear a light buff inside the helmet to prevent the sweat from dripping down into your eyes and causing irritation.

On The Move

A few pre-ride checks go a long way in helping you stay in better control. For instance, try and check the tyre pressures when the bike is barely ridden and at night. You do not want to run the risk of over inflating the tyres and cause loss of traction.

Even if you have to fill up your two-wheeler’s fuel tank, try and do it in the evenings, when the ambient temperature is low. This will allow the EVAP system to work its magic. In case you are out on a tour in the summer and you need to refill, pull up to a petrol pump and let the bike cool down for a few good minutes. This will allow the vapours to settle down and not burst out the little fuel that is there in the tank.

Summer

Staying light and carrying a hydration pack is essential, whether you are just commuting or on a mega ride. The motorcycle will not be overburdened making it easier for the rider to stay in control. And frequently sipping water will make sure that your bodily systems work without any hiccups, or else it might make you lose focus on the road.

When Stopped

It is important to take proper stops along the way. Even if your commute is long and tiring, try to leave early and take a stop in the middle to cool both you and your machine down. This becomes an even more important factor when touring in this ridiculous heat as planned stops are going to be super helpful in enjoying your ride.

Summer

While we did mention having water, replenishing electrolytes is also a very good idea. So, carrying ORS sachets, having nimbu pani/coconut water or even sugarcane juice and lassi will help cool down the body and restore the nutrients that you have lost on your ride.

And finally, try to secure a covered parking or cover your bike when you have parked it so that it becomes cool for the next ride.

These are some basic tips that we have found helpful in beating the heat. Hope it helps you along the way as well.
