Sun Mobility has debuted a modular multi-battery swapping solution for heavy commercial vehicles on a Tata Starbus platform at Prawaas 5.0.

Seeking to accelerate the electrification of mass transit and commercial freight corridors, green energy infrastructure provider Sun Mobility has launched a new technical architecture designed for heavy-duty electric vehicles (HEVs).

Unveiled at the Prawaas 5.0 public transport exhibition in Gujarat, the company debuted its Modular Multi-Battery Swappable Solution integrated directly onto a Tata Starbus 12-metre EV chassis. The infrastructure project was officially opened by Amrendra Kishore Singh, Director at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, alongside senior executives from Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Sun Mobility’s leadership team.

The core framework utilises an AIS-038-certified modular battery-swapping setup engineered to bypass long stationary charging periods and reduce the high initial purchase cost of commercial electric vehicles. The dual-pack configuration allows operators to automatically swap two batteries simultaneously in under five minutes at a Quick Interchange Station (QIS), increasing overall fleet uptime.

This common hardware matrix supports both 50 kWh and 100 kWh battery pack capacities and can scale dynamically across multiple vehicle classes ranging from 3-tonne delivery trucks up to 55-tonne heavy-duty freight vehicles without needing a structural redesign.

To lower commercial acquisition barriers, the company is deploying this platform through a proprietary Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription model. Under this framework, the expensive battery packs are uncoupled from the vehicle invoice, allowing transport operators to buy the truck or bus shell alone and pay exclusively for the net energy consumed during swaps.

This mechanism transfers asset management, performance tracking, and technical obsolescence risks directly to the swap network operator, placing electric fleet financing on a similar operational footing to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) transport.

The commercial rollout lands at a strategic inflection point for India’s heavy vehicle market as state transport undertakings and private logistics providers navigate new green procurement frameworks like the PM E-Drive policy.

Architecturally, every vehicle on the platform functions as a live data node linked to an automated tracking network. Operating via the company's proprietary Digital Twin cloud framework, the system tracks real-time battery health indicators, physical coordinates, operator behaviour patterns, and energy consumption metrics while maintaining Over-The-Air (OTA) software update channels.
