Kapur passed away in England, reportedly due to a heart attack.
Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of Sona Comstar aged 53, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in England, reportedly due to a heart attack.
As the Chairman of Sona Comstar, Kapur played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a global leader in precision automotive components. He took over as Managing Director in 2015 following his father's passing, and later assumed the role of Chairman, steering the company through significant growth and technological evolution.
Under his guidance, Sona Comstar expanded its global footprint with manufacturing and R&D operations spanning India, the USA, Mexico, Serbia, and China. He was instrumental in shifting the company's focus towards the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market, ensuring Sona Comstar became a key supplier of highly engineered, mission-critical systems and components for EVs, including traction motors and differential assemblies. His vision for electrification positioned the company at the forefront of the industry's transition to future mobility.
Kapur's influence extended far beyond Sona Comstar's corporate boundaries. He was a vocal advocate for the Indian automotive component industry, tirelessly working to enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.
He served as the President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) for the 2021-22 session, the apex body representing the sector. In this esteemed position, Mr. Kapur spearheaded initiatives aimed at driving technological adoption, promoting localization, and fostering indigenous development to achieve an 'Atmanirbhar' (self-reliant) automotive ecosystem. His foresight was evident in his earlier roles as Chairman of ACMA's Electric Mobility Committee (2015-2016) and the Sustainable Development Committee (2014-2017), where he laid the groundwork for the industry's embrace of cleaner technologies.
His leadership also made a significant impact at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), where he served as Co-Chairman of the Manufacturing Council (2020–2022) and was recently elected Chairman of the CII Northern Region for 2025-26. In these capacities, he championed policies for industrial growth, advocated for MSMEs, and promoted innovation and sustainability across various manufacturing sectors.
