Suzuki is setting up its second two-wheeler manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda, Haryana.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd. (SMIPL) has completed 20 years of production in India, marking a significant milestone for the company’s local operations. Since beginning India operations in February 2006, the company has crossed 10 million units in production in India, reflecting the scale of its expansion and the strength of its market presence.

SMIPL entered the Indian two-wheeler market with the Suzuki Heat 125 and Suzuki Zeus 125, and later strengthened its presence with the launch of the Access 125 scooter in 2007. That early portfolio helped establish Suzuki as a serious player in both the scooter and motorcycle categories. Since then, the company has widened its range to address daily commuting needs as well as performance-oriented riding.

Among the models that have shaped this journey, the Suzuki Access stands out as a key product in the 125 cc scooter space. The Burgman line helped Suzuki build a stronger position in the premium scooter segment, while the sporty Avenis added another layer to the scooter portfolio. On the motorcycle side, the Gixxer series, V-Strom SX and larger-capacity models such as the Hayabusa, GSX-8R and V-Strom 800 DE have helped the brand cover a wider spread of customer preferences.

Growth Backed by Scale and Customer Trust

The company said sales have doubled over the last four years, supported by stronger demand and continued product updates. SMIPL has also reached several important production milestones along the way, including one million customers in 2012 and five million units in 2020, before crossing the 10 million production mark in 2026. These figures point to a long period of gradual expansion rather than sudden growth.

In a statement, Kenichi Umeda, Managing Director, SMIPL, said, “Marking 20 years of start of production in India is a significant milestone for all of us at SMIPL. This journey has been made possible by the trust and support of our customers, dealer partners, suppliers, and employees, who have stood by us at every step. Through gradual expansion of our product portfolio, sustained investments in manufacturing, and focus on quality and reliability, we have steadily scaled our presence in India.”

He noted that SMIPL now has presence across all states through 1,240 touchpoints and works with 212 suppliers. He also emphasised Suzuki’s “One-by-One” approach, which focuses on quality in each unit and hospitality in every customer interaction.

Future Plans: Electric Mobility, Flex-Fuel and New Capacity

Looking ahead, SMIPL is preparing for a broader technology shift. The company has already introduced the e-Access as its entry into electric mobility and the Gixxer SF 250 FFV with E85-compliant flex-fuel technology. It has also begun groundwork for a second manufacturing plant at Kharkhoda, which points to confidence in long-term demand.

The company says its future strategy will follow a multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, using a mix of fuel and power solutions suited to the Indian market. That suggests Suzuki is not relying on a single transition path, but instead planning for multiple technologies as the market evolves. Suzuki’s Gurugram facility has played an important role in positioning India as a global production base for the brand. According to the company, made-in-India Suzuki two-wheelers are now exported to 77 countries.
