According to the government order, vehicle manufacturers highlighted Tamil Nadu's growing EV market share.
The Tamil Nadu government has granted a two-year extension to its complete road tax exemption for electric vehicles, marking a significant boost for green transport adoption across the state. The 100 per cent tax exemption for all battery-operated vehicles, which was scheduled to expire on 1 January 2026, will now continue until 31 December 2027, according to a government order issued on 29 December, The Hindu Business Line has reported.
The extension covers both transport and non-transport categories of electric vehicles and responds to sustained appeals from EV manufacturers and industry representatives who sought continued policy support. According to the government order, vehicle manufacturers highlighted Tamil Nadu's growing EV market share, which has reached approximately 7.8 per cent in 2025 -- representing substantial progress in the state's clean transport transition. Industry stakeholders requested the extension across all vehicle categories to maintain this momentum.
The Transport Commissioner separately recommended the extension whilst ensuring compliance with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, the order stated.
Additionally, authorities have been directed to prepare a comprehensive assessment examining the potential implications of introducing taxes on electric vehicles, taking into account approaches adopted by other Indian states.
Notably, Tamil Nadu first introduced the road tax exemption under its 2019 Electric Vehicle Policy, alongside other incentives designed to support the emerging EV sector. The initial exemption, granted until 2022, was subsequently extended for three years before this latest two-year extension was announced.
