Tata AutoComp plans to acquire an 80 per cent stake in Artifex and gain a substantial customer base in Europe.
Tata AutoComp has announced that it will acquire an 80 per cent stake in Artifex Interior Systems Limited. Tata’s automotive components division will acquire this stake by purchasing Jaguar Land Rover’s shares in the interior systems manufacturer.
Recently, Tata AutoComp also announced plans to acquire International Automotive Components Group Sweden AB (IAC Sweden). Interestingly, until recently, Artifex was known as IAC UK. It is well known that Tata AutoComp is a key supplier to Tesla, and with Tesla-Tata Group reportedly starting work in India, these acquisitions could mean Tata AutoComp will become a key supplier of EV components globally.
This is an interesting development as Tata AutoComp’s sister company, Tata Motors, owns a majority share of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). This means that the two companies have made an internal sale within the Tata Group, helping JLR raise cash internally.
The bigger question here is why JLR is selling its stake in Artifex. It’s widely known that the British marque has had a tough time financially lately since it decided to rebrand itself ahead of its new electric-only future. Is JLR in such financial trouble that it has to raise cash within the Tata Group to save itself? It also remains unclear how much Tata Motors is paying JLR to acquire the 80 per cent stake in Artifex. Acko Drive has reached out to Tata AutoComp, and we will update the story once we receive a response.
Artifex had revenue of GBP 296 million (roughly ₹3,277 crore) in the financial year 2024-25 (FY25). Tata AutoComp’s deal is subject to approvals and customary closing conditions. With this acquisition, Tata AutoComp will gain access to OEMs like Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, MINI, Bentley, INEOS and Toyota in the passenger vehicle segments in the European market.
Arvind Goel, Vice Chairman of Tata AutoComp Systems, said, “This acquisition aligns with our strategic vision of expanding our global footprint and strengthening our expertise in automotive interior systems. Artifex’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and established customer relationships will enhance our presence in key markets, enabling us to deliver differentiated solutions and drive long-term growth.”
