There is a lot of future tech and cleaner mobility solutions coming our way from Tata
Tata Motors has set a new national record in the four-wheeler segment by filing 250 patents and 148 design applications in the fiscal year that has just gone by. These filings align with key automotive trends such as connectivity, electrification, sustainability and safety. Additionally, it also encompasses a broad spectrum of product and process innovations like hydrogen-based vehicles and fuel cells. Tata Motors has also filed patents for various vehicle systems like battery, powertrain, body and trim, suspension, brakes, HVAC, and emission controls.

Tata Motors also filed 81 copyright applications, and secured 68 patent grants, thus bringing its total granted patents to 918. “This milestone reflects our continued pursuit of automotive excellence and reinforces our long-term vision of manufacturing greener, safer, and more efficient vehicles. With a growing portfolio of pioneering technologies, we remain committed to supporting nation-building through cutting-edge solutions,” said Rajendra Petkar, President and Chief Technology Officer, Tata Motors.
In terms of record patent filing, Tata Motors is closely trailed by Mahindra & Mahindra. The predominantly SUV-maker is at second position, after it received approvals for 674 patents last year, the majority of which came from its Indian Patent Office. Just like Tata Motors, Mahindra has also filed patents for both ICE and EV powertrains, vehicle mechanical systems, electronics, manufacturing processes, electric tractors and advanced engineering, to name a few.
Tata’s patent filings gives us an idea as to the kind of innovations it aims to bring in the four-wheeler industry in India. While the marque has a bunch of exciting EVs, like the Sierra.ev slated for launch soon, the additional tech patents further sheds a light on the company moving towards the sustainable direction. What remains to be seen is just how feasible and relevant to the times these patents will be in the coming few years.
