Tata Motors is the undisputed leader in the electric passenger vehicle segment but competition has stiffened over the last few months with rivals like Mahindra, MG, and now Maruti Suzuki pulling up their socks. Tata Motors has now announced a number of initiatives in order to maintain its position as the market leader.

The company has outlined an aggressive expansion strategy for its electric vehicle (EV) business, announcing an investment of ₹16,000–18,000 crore between FY2025 and FY2030 to strengthen products, technologies, and the broader EV ecosystem. This investment will not only be utilised for new products, but also support development of indigenous EV architectures like Acti.ev, localisation of the EV value chain, and the expansion of charging infrastructure.

At the time when Tata Motors entered India’s EV market in 2018 with the launch of Tiago EV and Tigor EV, the Indian market was marked by limited range offerings, high prices, and an underdeveloped charging network. Early EVs offered sub-110km real-world range, cost nearly twice as much as their ICE counterparts, and lacked ecosystem confidence among customers and manufacturers alike.

Tata Group addressed the challenges by leveraging group synergies to build an end-to-end EV ecosystem from the ground up. Key early priorities included improving real-world range to around 200km, narrowing the price gap with ICE vehicles, ensuring reliable home charging, and offering strong warranty assurance to build customer confidence.

Tata Nexon EV hits sales landmark

The Nexon EV has emerged as a cornerstone of Tata’s EV strategy. Introduced in 2020 as India’s first mainstream electric SUV, the Tata Nexon EV has evolved significantly in range, pricing, and ownership proposition. The company claims to have sold one lakh cumulative units of the Nexon EV since it was launched, making it the first electric vehicle in India to achieve this feat.

Over the years, the Nexon.ev’s real-world range has improved from around 230km to up to 375km (C75 cycle), while pricing has moved closer to parity with comparable ICE models. This combination of usability, affordability, and warranty confidence has helped drive sales from approximately 300 units per month in the early phase to nearly 3,000 units per month at its peak.

Upcoming Tata.ev models

The homegrown carmaker has also announced that it will launch three EVs in the next calendar year including the Sierra.ev, the Punch.ev facelift and the much-awaited premium EVs under the Avinya brand, most likely in the same order. Moreover, there will be five new nameplates in the Tata’s EV portfolio by FY2030.

Beyond products, Tata Motors is focussing on democratising EV adoption through the industry’s widest electric portfolio and a rapidly expanding retail footprint. The company has expanded its sales and service reach to over 1,200 outlets across the country. More than 5,000 technicians have been trained to support EV customers, while Tata.ev ownership now spans over 1,000 cities and towns.

Customer usage data highlights growing confidence in EVs with many users completing long-distance trips exceeding 400km in a single day. According to the company’s survey, an average Tata.ev owner drives 20,000 km in a year which is significantly more than an average ICE consumer who drives around 12,000 km in a year. Moreover, Tata claims that 84% of its EV owners use as primary cars

Scaling Up Charging Infrastructure

Besides new products, Tata Motors will also be scaling up its charging infrastructure to one million charging points by 2030.Currently, over 100 Tata.ev Mega Charging Hubs are operational across the country, each offering charging speeds of 120kW and above, with 4 to 16 charging points per hub.

In addition, Tata’s ecosystem now includes over two lakh home chargers, more than 20,000 public and partner chargers, over 500 verified chargers, and thousands of community charging points. This has helped achieve public charger coverage across 91 per cent of national highways.
