Over the last 20 years, the Tata-Stellantis joint venture has produced over 1.37 million vehicles, employs over 5,000 personnel, and produces 222,000 vehicles every year. The MoU looks to expand the partnership in the future.
Tata Motors and Stellantis have completed a 20 years of partnership in India. The two major automakers are celebrating two decades of the 50:50 joint venture, Fiat India Automobiles Private Ltd (FIAPL). To commemorate the occasion, Tata and Stellantis have announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore further opportunities across manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain in India and overseas.
Over the last 20 years, the Tata-Stellantis joint venture (JV) has produced over 1.37 million vehicles, employs over 5,000 personnel, and produces 222,000 vehicles every year. This includes four Jeep and three Tata Motors models at the JV plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra.
Speaking on the milestone, Grégoire Olivier, Chief Operating Officer of Stellantis Asia Pacific, said, “FIAPL stands as a testament to what two strong organizations can achieve together. As we commemorate this milestone, we remain focused on evolving the partnership to support future-ready manufacturing, innovation, and sustainable growth in the region.”

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director & CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, added: “Our partnership with Stellantis through FIAPL reflects the strength of a long-standing collaboration built on trust, shared values and a common vision. We look forward to deepening this relationship with Stellantis in the years ahead.”
Both companies did not divulge too much on what the future collaborations will be about. However, the partnership has helped leverage Stellantis’ global expertise and Tata’s local capabilities, allowing FIAPL to strengthen manufacturing, powertrain, and supply-chain network in India. This also lays the foundation for the future collaboration for both automakers. The MoU is expected to see Tata supplying engines to Stellantis, particularly the 1.5-litre T-GDI engine.
Reports suggest that the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol could power the Jeep Compass and Meridian in the future. The motor already powers the Tata Sierra, Harrier and Safari. Considering both the Compass and Meridian miss out on a petrol engine, and by extension, a major chunk of sales in Delhi-NCR, the move could allow both models a new lease of life.
Notably, the 2.0-litre MultiJet II diesel engine powering a host of Tata cars is a Stellantis unit. Tata recently acquired the licensing rights from Stellantis for the MultiJet II diesel engine for in-house development.
