In a significant step towards advancing indigenous manufacturing, Tata Motors Group has commenced construction of a world-class production facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. This new plant will manufacture next-generation vehicles for Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), serving both domestic and international markets. The ground-breaking ceremony, held today, marks an important milestone in Tata Motors’ ongoing commitment to “Make in India, For the World.”
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin and N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors. In his remarks, the Chief Minister welcomed the new venture, emphasising the Tata Group’s long-standing relationship with Tamil Nadu, where many of its businesses have been operating successfully for years. “Tata Motors is an auto manufacturer of global scale, and we welcome them for setting up their newest manufacturing facility here,” Stalin noted.
Tata Motors Group plans to invest approximately ₹9,000 crore in this advanced manufacturing plant, which is expected to create over 5,000 jobs—both direct and indirect. Production at the facility will begin in phases, with an eventual annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units to be achieved over the next 5 to 7 years. This will provide a substantial boost to local employment and skill development.
An impressive aspect of the new plant is its commitment to sustainability. Tata Motors has pledged to operate the facility on 100% renewable energy, aligning with its broader goals for sustainable manufacturing. Additionally, N. Chandrasekaran highlighted that the company aims to employ a significant number of women across various levels at the plant, reinforcing Tata’s focus on diversity and empowerment.
One of the key objectives of this new facility is to produce next-generation electric and luxury vehicles for both Tata Motors and JLR. Tata’s move comes at a time when India’s EV market is rapidly growing, with government policies supporting a shift toward greener mobility solutions. The investment is also a critical step in expanding Tata Motors' global footprint. With the plant catering to international markets, the company aims to boost exports of its electric and luxury models, including JLR vehicles.
