Tata Motors is rapidly scaling up output of its revived Sierra SUV after bookings for the model surpassed 100,000 units, highlighting the depth of nationwide demand for the nameplate's return to the Indian market more than two decades after the original went out of production. The Sierra has become Tata Motors' third best-selling SUV after the Nexon and Punch, accounting for an 11 per cent share of the company's passenger vehicle sales in January-February 2026. Deliveries got under way on 15 January 2026, and the company has dispatched and delivered more than 14,000 units through to the end of February 2026, according to a company spokesperson.

"The strong bookings and nationwide demand for the Tata Sierra is being addressed with rigor and agility," a spokesperson was quoted as saying. "Since commencing deliveries in mid January, we have successfully dispatched and delivered over 14,000 Sierra vehicles as of February 2026 and are firmly on course to further accelerate deliveries."

The company declined to disclose specific production figures or formal capacity targets for the model.

Reports suggest Tata Motors is working to lift Sierra output to approximately 15,000 units per month by the second quarter, as manufacturing processes stabilise and the supply chain aligns with demand levels. The expanded production capacity is also expected to bring down waiting times, which currently stand at around six to seven months depending on the variant chosen.

Of the targeted monthly volume, around 12,000 units are expected to be the internal combustion engine variant. The electric derivative -- developed under the internal codename 'Rowa' -- is expected to contribute incremental volumes once it enters production, with the Sierra EV confirmed for launch by June 2026. Production of the electric version is expected to begin within a quarter of the ICE variant's production ramp-up, extending the Sierra nameplate across both conventional and electrified powertrains.

The Sierra push comes as Tata Motors notched its highest-ever monthly passenger vehicle sales figure, surpassing 70,000 units. The Sierra contributed around 10 per cent to Tata Motors' record monthly wholesale figure of 70,222 units in January 2026. Industry sources suggest that incremental volumes from the Sierra, combined with the recently refreshed Punch, could help the company sustain monthly output of around 70,000 units, provided the broader operating environment holds.

With the Sierra now part of its SUV portfolio, Tata Motors is also expected to intensify its contest with Mahindra & Mahindra for the number two position in India's passenger vehicle market this calendar year, according to industry estimates.

The production ramp-up is taking place against a backdrop of industry speculation about possible supply-chain disruptions linked to the supply of natural gas to manufacturing facilities. Tata Motors' Sanand plant, which produces both the Sierra and the Nexon, consumes between 24,000 and 25,000 standard cubic metres of natural gas per day and also relies on propane.
