Tesla has discontinued two of its most expensive and iconic models. While never sold in India, the Model S and Model X helped Tesla become the EV giant it is today.
Tesla has officially discontinued production of its flagship Model S and Model X, bringing an end to a journey that helped define the brand’s early success.
CEO Elon Musk confirmed that custom orders for both models have now ceased, with fewer than 600 units remaining in global inventory. Buyers can only purchase pre-configured vehicles currently in stock, most of which are located in the United States.
The move follows earlier signals from Tesla, with Musk having indicated during the company’s Q4 2025 earnings call that production would wind down. He had described the decision as an “honourable discharge”, urging customers to place final orders before production ended.
The Model S, launched in 2012, was Tesla’s first mass-market car and went on to become the world’s best-selling plug-in EV in 2015 and 2016. The Model X followed in 2015, introducing distinctive features such as falcon-wing doors. Combined, the two models accounted for over 6,10,000 units sold globally.
While not sold in India, sales of the Model S and Model X had been on a steady decline globally in recent years. Tesla stopped reporting individual figures for the two models in 2023, grouping them under an “Other Models” category.

A mid-2025 update, which included minor design tweaks and a price increase, failed to revive demand amid growing competition from newer luxury EVs.
With limited inventory left (in countries where these cars are sold) and no new orders being accepted, the remaining units are expected to sell out quickly, marking the final chapter for two of Tesla’s most iconic models.
